In partnership with Starling Bank, the Great Bristish Entrepreneur Awards have been running since 2012. The GBEA aim to celebrate the passionate and dedicated people behind businesses across Great Britain. The award categories are as diverse as the entrepreneurs that are nominated, with a total of 18 categories. One of these categories is that of “Entrepreneur for Good”. This award celebrates those who are going above and beyond. Specifically, running businesses that do more and that contribute to the greater good of their community.

Alex Winstanley, Managing Director of Happy Smiles Training CIC, is one of the fantastic finalists for the 2021 award. Alex was nominated for the award due to his enthusiasm for promoting social change and creating inclusive communities. His work gives “A new meaning to disability”.

Education and Inclusivity

There are a variety of things that can create barriers to an inclusive environment: preconceived beliefs, a lack of knowledge on disabilities, fear of saying the wrong thing. Alex works tirelessly, supported by his team of Inclusion Champions, to break down these barriers. The Happy Smiles team look to improve understanding of different types of disabilities. For this reason, they carry out a whole host of training sessions and activities across the country. Sessions give students a genuine understanding of disabilities from specially qualified teachers – the Inclusion Champions. The Inclusion Champions are trained young disabled adults who work with Alex to deliver the training courses. Of course, their lived experience is invaluable in conveying a message of resilience and inclusion from their very unique viewpoints.

Education, acceptance and inclusivity are at the heart of everything Alex does with Happy Smiles Training CIC.  It is hardly a surprise then that he has been shortlisted for the “Entrepreneur For Good Award”. We hope you agree that this is a well deserved recognition for both Alex and the rest of the Happy Smiles team!
